The ideal way to store a Top hat is in a hat box. Never rest a Top hat on its brim, as it will settle and lose its shape. Preferably, turn the hat upside down and rest it on the crown. After each wearing, dust your hat.

Folding a Collapsible Top Hat

Never store a satin collapsible top hat in its folded collapsed position. This will weaken the springs and wrinkle the fabric. Preferably, store the hat in its open position, and stand it on the crown. When collapsing the satin top hat, hold the top of the hat against your chest, grasp the side brim and press evenly. To open, hold your Top hat upside down and by the front brim, tap the edge of the back brim smartly against the palm of your other hand, allowing the top to expand.

Top Hats history

The Silk Top hat was first designed around 1830. European gentlemen first donned this new look, a Top hat with the same shape as the tall beaver Top hat, but covered instead with shiny plush silk. The silk hat for a time nearly replaced the beaver Top hat, and caused a sharp drop in the price of American beaver skins. The frontiersman, Kit Carson, is quoted as saying "Hell is paved with silk hats".

The Satin Collapsible Top Hat was popularly known as the folding opera hat. Silk top hats reached such fantastic size and shape in France that it became impossible to house them in checkrooms. A Paris hatter thus invented the folding opera hat or satin collapsible top hat, a Top hat formed on folding springs and then covered with a lustrous silk fabric.
